UI vs UX Design
What are the differences?
Do you remember the websites at the beginning of 2000? The websites back then where very similar to each other, unintuitive, bad design and it was very hard to find something you needed. These websites did not know what UX vs UI design was.
UI vs UX design are two of the most often confused and misunderstood terms in web / app design. They have distinct meanings and refer to totally different aspects of design. So, what are the differences between UI design and UX design, and why does it matter?
What is UI Design?
The 'UI' in UI design stands for 'user interface'. The user interface is the visual appearance of an website or application, otherwise known as the visual design. A good UI design helps attract users and ensures a pleasant product experience. It consists all of the graphical elements such as text, images, buttons, forms and behaviors like what will happen when the user's click / drag / enter. Also it includes everything that the user can see and interact with. Long story short, it covers any sort of visual element that must be designed.
At the end of the day UI designers are just graphic designers that are specialized in web / app design. This requires UI designers to have a good sense of aesthetics and technical skills. The goal of the UI designers to create attractive and visually stimulating user interface to match the purpose and personality of the project. To make sure that every single visual element feels united both aesthetically and in purpose.
What is UX Design?
The 'UX' in UX design stands for 'user experience'. The user experience refers to how a user experiences or interacts with a website or application. Is the experience smooth and intuitive or is it lumpy and complicated? User experience is determined by how easy or difficult it is to interact with the application that the UI designers have created. The goal of a UX design is to make a product that is as easy to use as possible so that it creates great experience for the user.
So UX designers are also concerned with the user interface. This is why most people get confused about the terms UI vs UX. UI designers are creating the visual representation of user interface of an app while UX designers are in charge of determining how the user interface operates. User experience is the process of researching, developing and improving all aspects of user interaction of a product to satisfy its users. If it works well and feels seamless, the user will have a good experience. UX design contributes to a product that provides an effective user experience. It includes different disciplines, such as visual design, interaction design, usability, and more.
UI and UX work together in harmony
UI and UX design need different skills sets, but as you now know they always overlap. Simply, UX design refers to user experience design, and UI design refers to the user interface design. They have a close relationship in product design but serve different roles. If you look at the terms of functionality then you will see the obvious difference: UI is how things look, UX is how things work. UX is a process, while UI is a deliverable.
A design which is beautiful can not save a bad user experience. In the same way a very intuitive user experience can't save a bad user interface. When UI and UX work together in harmony that’s when incredible websites are created.
